Victoria Development Map
Victoria Development Map
This map is updated and enhanced on a daily/weekly basis.
For a full window interactive experience click the square expand icon at the top right of the map below.
This map is focused on Victoria as well as other interesting or key projects in Greater Victoria. With 13 municipalities in the region we can't track everything and there is also significant development in Langford, Colwood and Esquimalt and Saanich. Single family homes, duplexes and small townhome projects in Victoria are also not tracked. Nor Centres for Ants.
Select various categories (layers) to see the development projects. Orange hammer indicates an active proposal, green is for active construction or excavation, while a black ✓ indicates completed and a black X mark means the project is stale or unlikely to proceed.
Selecting the project name/address in the left hand menu or on the map icon will bring up detailed info on the project including news stories, link to project plans, full size pictures (click on the small version in the upper left corner to open) and construction video updates from Mapping Victoria.
You can change to satellite view by clicking the square map icon at the very bottom of the menu.
To view a categorized listing of all the developments shown in the map, check out the Project Listing, where each project has its own page.
The development tracker map includes my own photos, commentary and construction update videos which you can also view directly on my YouTube channel. The latest video updates are also available at the bottom of this page.
The map also includes select renderings and visuals sourced from developer and architect materials, as well as public submissions to the City of Victoria’s Development Tracker. All images remain © their respective owners and are used here under fair dealing (Canadian Copyright Act) for informational and educational purposes, to illustrate publicly available development proposals.
Mapping Victoria provides a visual overview of select city and regional developments, but is not a duplicate of the City of Victoria's Development Tracker. The City's tracker is the definitive legal source and our entries link directly to it.
Please contact mappingvictoria@gmail.com if you have information or corrections to share. Heck, even your opinions on this tracker or the individual projects - I'd love to hear (read) it! Too small, too big, not enough parking, ugly or a gem - what's your take?
For some of my own - check out Breaking News where I share my observations and the latest news in the world of local development, architecture and city planning.
Isn't this a bit much?
Yes
Why didn't you x, y or z?
Free. Google My Maps is free. As is Google Sites so there are limitations and I refuse to ask for donations or corporate sponsorship to improve it. Take your money and donate it to your favourite charity or buy Elon Musk a one way ticket to Mars.
Ok, wiseass if you're set on using Google My Maps why so few categories in your map?
Google My Maps allows only 10 layers per map and heavy use of pins or linked information slows the maps response time. Better to have cleaner faster maps instead of a bloated slow one, or so my mother always told me.
What's up with those long exposed links in the Google Maps?
I get it, no one wants to see long exposed links; however, Google does not allow hyperlinked text within Google My Maps. But you can check out the Project Listing page which has deeply embedded links and as per FAQ question 3 - many categories.
Are you a developer shill, plant, stooge or lackeyboy?
No. 95% of my photography is of heritage buildings and homes. My ridiculous goal is to document the streets and landscape of Victoria, thus I'm interested in what has been as well as what will be - aka new construction. And devastation of the city by natural and man made events. I'll try to capture that too.
Why don't you share your opinion more often on new developments in Victoria?
Why don't you? Email me at mappingvictoria@gmail.com and I may feature your thoughts on the site. For the most part I won't share my personal opinion as there is just too much going on and truth be told about 25% of new projects are good to excellent, 50% not bad, and 25% could use improvement. Plus who am I to poop all over someone who's put their money where their mouth is. That doesn't sound quite right does it..
Do you track every development in Victoria?
In the City of Victoria - pretty much, with the exception of single family homes (if that's even a thing anymore) and very small townhouse projects. Outside of Victoria mainly just large projects or stuff I'm interested in as there's just too much going on to keep on top of it all. Ironically one of the busiest places for construction is Langford which does not have a Development Tracker.. yet.
How do you define Under Construction?
Some development trackers include multiple categories to describe the development cycle. Such as demolition, site prep, excavation, etc. Well, that's overkill for me, the common man, woman and person. How the hell am I going to keep on top of that and who cares? Yes, the purists will claim excavation doesn't count - that under construction only starts when concrete is poured and Jimmy Hoffa is encased in it. For Mapping Victoria it means there is physical work being conducted on site, from clearing the land, excavation to construction of course, etc. As for demolishing existing structures I'll count that if the plans are to proceed immediately after with construction.
What's next?
Continuing to add and enhance the site including better visualizations of locations by using a 3D map or wider shots of the city showing multiple buildings to improve context. Google's base map is a bit messy so perhaps flyovers using Google Earth Studio.
You're on death row - what's your final meal request?
Hmm.. I do like a good blue cheese, but that's not exactly a meal is it. Also a big fan of Indian food. Let's go with a Guatemalan dish - Arroz con Pollo. Now there are many variations for that recipe, but I prefer the one my mother taught me. It involves a ton of garlic, ginger, olives, rice and boiled chicken (stay with me folks) which you fry up in a giant angry wok and serve with Sambal Oelek as a condiment. Or as a guest. Sambal was a nice guy and sadly the reason I'm on death row now. If he'd only woulda kept his mouth shut.
Is your mother Guatemalan?
No.
Has anyone even asked you these frequently asked questions?
No, I'm just so organized that I preemptively answer questions. That no one probably will ever ask. You're welcome.
