Context
What was known for decades as Blanshard Court opened in 1970 with 184 affordable homes on 7.8 acres bordered by Blanshard and Bay Streets and Hillside Avenue.
The area was the site of the controversial Rose-Blanshard urban renewal which saw the neighbourhood destroyed in a urban renewal/freeway scheme that was common throughout North America in the 1950's and '60's.
Spaken House is a temporary supportive housing building that sits on the northeast corner of the property and is home to 21 residents. This building is operated by the Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness. All the existing low-income Rent Geared to Income (RGI) homes will be replaced during redevelopment, and the Spaken House supportive homes will be replaced with a new, permanent building."
